Military Open-Air Complex "Stalin's Line"

"Stalin’s Line" is one of the most grandiose fortification ensembles in Belarus. The museum complex was made for the 60th anniversary of the Victory in WWII, and as opened in July, 2005. The complex was built with usage of traditional constructions, which was attended by state and public organizations, enterprises of different ownership forms, and the enthusiasts.

More and more people all over the world feel a deep interest in the history of World War II. It happened that the whole territory of Belarus can be regarded as a military museum. There's no place that wasn't wounded by WWII. The cities and villages were destroyed but the lessons that a war teaches society shouldn't be forgotten. Thus Belarusian people create museums, exhibitions and expositions dedicated to WWII and to the people who died during it.

The basis of the exposition of the complex is original pillboxes and military equipment of different years from the period of WWII and to the beginning of 90th. It is the most complete exposition in Belarus.

"Stalin's Line" is the chain of defensive installations. It is consisted of 23 fortified regions including more than 4,000 permanent weapon emplacements (pillboxes). It was a strong reinforced unit that spread to 1,200 kilometers. There were some other fortified regions in Belarus. Those fortified regions formed a united defense line. Minsk's fortified region No 63, which was 140 kilometers long included 327 pillboxes. In June 1941 at the lines of the Minsk's fortified region started fierce fights with the offensive units of the Nazi army.

The exposition of the museum is created and planed in such a way that from the first steps a visitor can feel the spirit of the times. The opportunity to be absorbed in history is one of the distinctive features of the museum. There is a common belief among veterans that if one comes closer to a pillbox and presses his ear to its wall he will hear the sounds of machine-guns and the shouts of soldiers. All entrenchments and communication trenches with special pits for machine-guns and with blindages and recesses for ammunition were reconstructed according to the designs of 1940.

The square of military equipment of different years is a highlight of the museum. It is the most complete exposition in the Republic of Belarus of all artillery and military equipment, which was adopted in different years, beginning from the war times.

Sometimes reconstructions of fights are carried out in the museum, and they give the visitors an opportunity to see the fights the same way they happened in Minsk fortified region in June of 1941.
